GENERAL INFORMATION
There are several websites that we believe would be of interest to our visitors
so we would like to recommend them to you.
First and foremost is The Good Sam Club.
In our opinion no one with an RV should even think of taking to the road without belonging
to The Good Sam Club. The money you
save by belonging, and taking advantage of the benefits of membership, will soon repay the
cost of joining.
We wouldn't dream of hitting the road with out
The Good Sam Club's
Roadside Service, especially designed for RVs, in place.
Probably the second most advisable thing to have along on a trip to Alaska is a copy of
Milepost®.
Milepost®:"Legendary Alaska trip planner
and Alaska travel guide to the highways, roads, ferries, lodgings, recreation,
sightseeing attractions and services along the Alaska Highway to and within Alaska,
including Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories and the Yukon,"
can be obtained from many sources but perhaps the easiest is directly
from their website.
Milepost®, known as the "Bible of Northern
travel", is a must have for the informed, Alaska bound traveler.
The next most important item for the RV traveler, going anywhere but especially
to Alaska, is the price of fuel. At
this site you can click on a map to get
current prices. The site is made up of a compilation of 170 gas price tracking sites
from around both the US and Canada. It currently has prices for Anchorage, AK, but not for
Fairbanks, that is subject to change as the site database grows. We include it as it
lists prices for the Lower 48 States, through which many of you will be traveling.
Alaskagasprices.com specializes in just
that, the price of gas in Alaska's cities and towns.
Gastips.com specializes in Canadian fuel prices.
If you are coming to Alaska you will probably be interested in the exchange rate between
US and Canadian dollars. Check out
XE.com Personal
Currency Assistant which provides
a really simple to use, exchange rate converter. It should probably be noted that
the converter appears as a popup, so you may need to disable your popup prevention
program before clicking this link.
DELTA JUNCTION
Delta Junction, called Delta by its residents, is the official end of the Alaska Highway.
Stop at the Visitor's Center,
known locally as "The Triangle,"
when you reach Delta and get your copy of the Official END of the Alaska Highway
Certificate.
Before you arrive you might want to check out these websites:
The City of Delta Junction website and
The Delta Online Newspaper to find out what is
going on in Delta.
While you are at the Visitor's Center be sure to go across the street and take a look
at the Sullivan Roadhouse. The building was removed from its original location along
the Valdez to Fairbanks trail and reconstructed at its current location. It
is now an interesting museum with artifacts from its days as an active Roadhouse.
There are also several informational placards outside the building. Take a
walk around the outside areas and be sure to take a look
at all the road building equipment from the days of Alcan construction.
Delta Junction, called Delta by its residents, is a full service community with an IGA
Grocery Store; several gas stations,
three of which sell propane; two hardware stores, three motels, several B&Bs, a Library
which provides Internet access. There is a medical clinic, complete with an Emergency Room;
a dentist and a Medical and Safety Equipment Supply house. There are also several churches
of a variety of denominations, all of whom welcome vistors to their services.
The fishing and hunting are great in the Delta area. We have a sporting goods store with
very knowledgable people who can give you good advice about conditions and equipment
suitable for use in this area. There is also an Office of Fish and Game where you can
get help with the regulations and insider advice.
There are Buffalo, Carribou, Moose, and Bears to be found in the Delta area. Ask your
host or the folks at the Visitor's Center where they may best be seen. There are Buffalo
farms and big game farms to see as well as the wildlife.
The Pipeline crosses the Tanana River about 7 miles north of Delta Junction. There is a
place there to pull out and read the bulletin board that tells all about it. The pipeline
bridge is considered to be one of the marvels of modern engineering. In the same pull out
The Fur Shack has a kiosk. Be sure to check out their products. You might also want to
take a look at their website. The Alaska Fur Shack
Delta is home to Rika's
Roadhouse, a don't miss facility. Rika's features historic
displays as well as a shop and restaurant. The park is 10 acres with paths for walking
and cabins set up as they would have been in the days when it was open as a Roadhouse for
travelers between Valdez and Fairbanks.
Plan to visit Delta Junction and spend a few days.
